The Volunteers

About Us

Trying to get an image of all the volunteers on a organisation is always hard and the Fairhill volunteers are no different. In the mean time…….

Alston Recreation Ground Trust is a registered charity (no. 520283) which looks after a 5-acre area of land known locally as Fairhill. The land is owned by all the residents of Alston, it was assigned, in 1899 to and for the benefit of leisure and recreation for the people of Alston.

Alston Recreation Ground Trust is made up of 9 trustees who are the management committee, they volunteer their time to manage and maintain Fairhill. The site is a community run recreation ground for all ages and consists of an under 5’s toddler play area; an older children’s play area; a fenced tarmac court for ball games; a grass football pitch; a wildlife pond area, a woodland walk and plenty of green spaces and seated areas for picnics. It is also the home of the Alston Bowling Club and Pavilion, and from 2022 the site has hosted the Alston Producer's Market, making it the highest market in England.

The Trustees are residents of Alston and represent the users of Fairhill, meeting at least 4 times a year with an Annual General Meeting being held in November.

We have three trustee spaces available at the moment

Maintenance is an ongoing job, with regular site inspections. We employ a local contractor who does a marvellous job looking after the area, including grass cutting and tree/shrub care. We organise a weekly working group, where volunteers can come along and get involved.

The Trust has to fundraise to be able to maintain and insure the Recreation Ground, through various activities including the annual Lotto, and a sponsored bike ride, the Trustees are always looking for new and exciting ways to raise much needed funds.

Volunteering

If you would like to get involved in supporting Fairhill we would love to hear from you, to work well, the Trust needs committee members and volunteers, people to help with keeping Fairhill free from litter, equipment kept looking good, help with tree and shrub maintenance, bulb planting, pond weed clearance, path weed clearance, and, critically, fundraising, signing up for the annual lotto and ideas for fundraising. We are always looking for new members and new ideas; Fairhill belongs to everyone, we couldn’t make the progress that we do without the help of our local community. To be able to continue and provide the best facilities for the people of Alston, the Alston Recreation Ground Trust need people to get involved, becoming a Trustee or a volunteer, working as a team, means that we can achieve this.
